Taking Back the Tower: Simple Solutions for Saving Higher Education Review
This fast moving book really is right on in so many ways! The use of resources and strategic leadership chapters are particularly insightful and timely. All academic administrators and particularly Presidents,Provosts and Deans could profit from reading those chapters. Of course, as Smith also point out, the secrecy, oblivious disregard of valuable advice and counsel, and arrogance of the entrenched bureaucracy and hierarchy of administration/governance make it extremely difficult to elicit any, even marginal, positive change.
And, his observation that most Universities cannot and will probably never be able to claim excellence in research is also right on target. But there are segments and enclaves of excellence that should be nurtured, supported and carefully expanded. However, this rarely happens! Instead the few resources available for research support are dribbled away with tiny internal grants allocated by committees with no notion at all of strategic uses for the funds to advance the research enterprise. Apparently in many schools the hope is that everyone can become a "researcher". This hope is rarely realized.
Smith invokes the cancelling of a time honored custom at his institution called "Hanging of the Greens" at Christmas. It brought back pleasant memories of customs and ceremonies anticipated both on campus and in the community. Important customs that define the institution in many of our minds. So disappointing that it was allowed to deteriorate. Some traditions really must be preserved. He is right that they represent the "soul" of special (or at least what should be special) institutions. He points out so convincingly, that there is so much waste and inefficiency that the use of a pathetically small sum to maintain the finest traditions of an academic institution should not even be a point of debate. Academic administrators consistently and nearly universally ignore the concept of opportunity cost and waste huge sums on losing programs and unproductive people.
Thank you Dr. Smith. I am going to make sure your book is prominently touted in my current institution to those who might really profit from the analysis. There are many who will see the same problems and actually want to do something to make a difference. Many of your proposals would fit beautifully!
