Evidence-Based Management in Healthcare ReviewEBMgt in Health Care is the first text I have come across that can be used to help students in professional schools of business, policy or health learn the basics of evidence-based management practice. It has a lot of key features that I have been looking for in an EBMgt textbook.
Here are some of its important features in my opinion. It helps students see the different forms of evidence-based practice and how scientific findings and organizational facts are used in various combinations depending on the management problem involved. The set of cases target big picture issues such as mergers and acquisitions and more operational decisions. In that respect, the cases make sense to inexperienced students unfamiliar with different decision situations as well as more experienced practitioners. They are also interesting and relevant to concerns outside of healthcare. Business students often don't buy the idea that one can learn about management from studying hospitals (go figure). In fact, these cases provide lots of information on the decisions to be made, the features that make the decisions difficult and how findings and facts can be interpreted. In that respect, the details make it easier to draw parallels to decisions in organizations generally. Other useful features include the clear discussion of what evidence is and the recognition that both qualitative and quantitative facts and findings matter. The book also does a nice job of talking about how to search meta-data bases for scientific findings--helping to flesh out what would be said by the reference librarian every EBMgt class relies on.
The book presents EBMgt as a nascent field and works to create the expectations of students that they will continue to learn more about EBMgt and hone their practice skills over time. Annotated articles and website links give some guidance for future guided reading. In all, I am really pleased to have this book for my courses.Evidence-Based Management in Healthcare Overview
