The Definitive Guide to Emergency Department Operational Improvement: Employing Lean Principles with Current ED Best Practices to Create the "No Wait" Department ReviewThis book has been extremely helpful as a resource on my hospital's journey to creating a well functioning ED. We see 80K patients in a very small ED and have, by necessity, had to develop new processes that create improved patient flow. We have been utilizing Lean thinking for 5 years and have had much success; but our discovery of this book has helped us move to a higher level of improvement.The authors provide solid instruction in Lean tools such as value steam mapping, standard work, 5-S, etc. What has really been helpful is the chapters on queuing theory and its use to evaluate our ED flow as a series of queues that can be analyzed and understood. And once understood, we can identify our constraints. The book gives excellent guidance on how to problem solve and reduce or eliminate the constraint.
This is an excellent book that I highly recommend. I have challenged our leaders to master the concepts, tools and philosophies so well articulated by the authors as one more step on our journey to create a lean healthcare enterprise.
